It was only in 1895 that the first woman dentist in the UK graduated from Edinburgh Dental School, and a further 17 years until a woman was granted a dental qualification from The Royal College of Surgeons of England. From the next century onwards that is from 1960, women were encouraged to enter certain branches of profession. Dentists were one among these professions which were considered apt for women. Later, within the past 30 years, the graph of percentage of women on dentist register showed a positive growth from just over 10 percent in 1968 to a figure approaching 30 percent today. Today, we are almost able to see a 50-50 gender split in dental collages.

Behind this achievement have been the efforts of many brave women, who broke the stereotypes of men in many countries. Women are always regarded soft and are encouraged to take up jobs that require soft skills. Dentistry always requires soft skills and is considered as appealing to caring and creative sides of many women. Many women consider her job as it gives them the flexibility to work full time or part time.

Among dental students in India, about 50-60 percent of them in all dental schools are female. About 15 percent of deans in the dental collages in India are women, which forms a segment of 25 percent women working as dentists in the present time.
