The Indian Ministry of Textiles and Cab Experiences organized the One Bharat Sari Marathon, recognizing the traditional saree's cultural, social, and economic significance. The Walkathon was formally opened by Union Minister Piyush Goyal stating a social media fad, “so elegant, so beautiful, just looking like a wow.”
One Bharat Sari Marathon was organized in Mumbai where more than 5,000 women participated as a tribute to India's handloom industry which was organized by Hon'ble MP Smt. Poonam Mahajan and Hon'ble Minister of State for Railways & Textiles, Smt. Darshna Jardosh. The purpose of the event was to build social capital, support the handloom industry, and promote walking as a healthy habit.
The Handloom Sari Walk's main goals are to celebrate India's diverse weaves and styles as well as to revive the ancient art of wearing saris. The ladies have shown off their passion for saris and supported the handloom industry by participating in the walkathon. On December 10, 2023, the event took place at the MMRDA Ground, Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), Mumbai, and it went about two kilometers.
About 26.73 lakh weavers and 8.48 lakh allied workers are employed in the handloom industry and out of these, 19.1 lakh weavers and 6.3 lakh allied workers are female. Many hands are involved, both directly and indirectly, in the creation of a handloom sari and the handwoven textile. The sari, which stands for artistry, tradition, and timeless beauty, is more than just a piece of apparel, it is a representation of India's rich and varied cultural past.
The Mumbai edition of a walkathon featuring women from diverse backgrounds, wearing sarees, has showcased the Indian culture. Celebrities and influential figures supported the walkathon for women's participation, where popular faces including Shaina NC, Anita Dongre, Sonali Bendre, Sonali Kulkarni, Faye D’Souza, Rupali Ganguly, Falguni Pathak, Yasmin Karachiwala, Rouble Nagi, and Dolly Jain were present. Participants demonstrated cultural pride and solidarity, and the event was a success due to Mumbai Police's support.
Female Nashik Dhol performers in BKC created a lively atmosphere with ambient music, while Yasmin Karachiwala led a warm-up. The EMCEE staged dignitaries and celebrities, ensuring an exciting day.
